• the mini came into existence by request from many customers who loved the sound of the fuck overdrive but wished for a smaller package. i decided to pare down the functionality, yet add on some additional features so that the two pedals could live on a pedalboard together and each have their own strengths. more bass was added to the circuit to make it an enticing choice for bassists and keyboard players and the controls were streamlined to make it a more easy-to-digest pedal.

with the mini, you get the same lovely JFET overdrive at the core. a very simple bias knob allows the user to dial in saggy lo-fi, low-watt amp tones to clean chime-y hi-fi. with the addition of extra bass, a bass cut knob allows for a range of even cleaner, sparkle-y treble boost tones or huge low end suitable as a bass overdrive or full-range boost.

as with any smallsound/bigsound pedal, versatility and sound are paramount and the mini truly is a shining example.

please use a standard 9V DC power supply (designed for musical instruments) with a negative center 2.1mm barrel and do NOT run at higher voltages. peak current draw is around 12mA.

    controls
gain: simultaneously controls 2 gain stages for an extremely wide range from clean boost to overdrive to fuzz. this control hugely impacts the volume, so be careful…

volume: simple enough. it can be LOUD, depending on the settings of the gain control, so start with it low.

    treble: a passive LPF.

bass: a passive HPF which is pre-gain, so less bass means a cleaner signal and more bass means more saturated gain.

bias: a variant on a starve control which many pedals feature. optimal working voltage is around noon, with lower voltage counterclockwise for broken-up, gritty low-wattage amp tones and clockwise for more headroom and clarity.

For years I’d struggled to find gain that I could click with. Many years later I find this. Much like the other ss/bs pedals, the Mini is just great, so much awesome in such a small package, and nice and tweakable for a variety of equally great tones. And Brian is as equally awesome as the pedals he builds.
      Buy it!

    2. Hamish H

First SS/BS pedal and it’s a keeper for sure. If you want a ‘traditional’ OD that’s smooth and sweet, it’s in there. If you want a gated OD that’s almost big muff sounding, it’s in there too. Exceptionally versatile, great controls, and it’s a work of art to look at!

    3. Jesse A

This pedal is one of the coolest pedals I own considering how versatile it is. It’s a perfect balance of OD and fuzz. The EQ control options are amazing and the bias makes it even better. I highly recommend this pedal to anyone that wants something unique as well as useful.

    4. Dan O

I’ve never been able to get the distortion sound that’s in my head out of an amp or pedals until I got a mini. This would absolutely be my #1 desert island pedal. It can go from a clean boost to gnarly almost gated fuzz and everything in between and no matter what it sounds great! It works with other dirt pedals fantastically. Thank you Brian for creating this wonderful device!!! I’ve honestly never been more happy with my guitar sound than I am right now. I now own 2 smallsound/bigsound pedals, I’ll be getting my 3rd (a buzzz) this weekend and have serious plans for a second mini.

    5. John K

I have had the mini for a year or so now. I have a few overdrive/ distortion / fuzz pedals and the mini seems to beat all of them! I would seriously consider getting another one. Actually, why not three? I play mostly bass and it is the best thing I have found for a gated type fuzz which isn’t over the top: With the bias down low and the gain pointing left, you can almost get a brassy kinda sound (I used to play brass). With the bias all the way up, and the gain low, you can get a lovely juicy touch of drive with no fizzy nonsense. And then there are a whole load of tones between. Try it before an autowah or somesuch. No bass loss, except the balance goes towards mids/highs of course because it is a distortion.

    6. Mike

I got the Mini back in May, and like any great pedal, it took me a while to get used to. I was used to the typical overdrives that all sound like the Tubescreamer or the Blues Breaker. This one was different. With the Bass and Trebble controls, you can get some wild drive tones or you can simply use the Mini as a clean boost (Drive down all the way and volume at about 3 o’clock). The bias knob allows you to get everything from a dirty fuzz tone to a transparent drive. As a guitarist, I play in many different settings, playing multiple genres including worship, metal, alt. rock, blues, or ambient/noise making stuff. No matter what I’m playing, the Mini finds a place in my tone. It is an extremely versatile pedal that has a unique sound and can make your tone truly stand out. After all, that is what guitarists are trying to do, stand out. Get this pedal and spread the word. The world of guitar playing needs pedals like this so that we don’t have to continue listening to the same few guitar tones from every band.

I’ve had the mini for two years now, and everything written about it here is completely true. I played through multichannel amps only for several years because most overdrives I tried just didn’t sound that great outside a few specific settings. Then I found the mini, and ordered one after watching some videos. About a week after emailing Brian, the Mini arrived, and I instantly fell in love. I have run it for high gain and low gain. I’ve pushed my other drives with it, and I’ve pushed it with my other drives. It delivers every time. I’ve even gone without it on my board at times, but it was never long until I put it back on. This week I took it to a jam session with some friends who have some nice dirt pedals on their boards. As soon as I kicked on the mini they were floored. One of them ended up playing my setup for the second half of our jam and just played through the mini 90% of the time. I’ve always wanted to write a review of it here, but I couldn’t put my thoughts on the mini into words others hadn’t said until now. The Mini grabs people’s attention and never lets go, whether that’s yours or your audience’s. I could go on more, but if you’re here considering one, stop reading and just buy it already. You won’t regret it.

    8. Anthony

Obsessed with my mini, I highly recommend it, especially if you play bass guitar. It gives you a really aggressive tone with the gain all the way up and a nice fuzz with the gain dialed back. The bias knob is cool too, a great range of distinct tones. Also, as a bassist, I’m really glad that there’s absolutely no low-end getting lost, it sounds fantastic and as I’ve read other reviews, it seems like it complements other instruments very well.

Only complaints really would be the lack of input and output labels since both ends can bypass a clean signal but to get the effect it’s a one way street. Not a huge deal, but did leave me puzzled when I plugged it in incorrectly on the first try. Also there’s not a lot of breathing room for the bias knob as it sits in the middle of the other four, its hard not to accidentally move your volume or gain knobs when trying to turn the bias.

The customer service was really great and much appreciated; Brian’s really patient and knows the ins and outs of his products. Definitely looking forward to getting another Smallsound/Bigsound pedal in the future!

    9. Josue Moreno

The mini is so incredibly versatile! When I’m listening to music with my brother/drummer/first person I talk to about gear and I hear a(ny) sick overdriven tone, I say, “I can do that.”

If this review doesn’t convince you, keep reading…

The Mini started to fascinate me because of it’s controllability and versatility. Easy to use, plethora of sounds and something unique. The I saw a video, where Mr. Hamilton was showing a few mods(ring-mod kind of upper octave thingy for low and high gain applications) he had done, asked about them and got them in the same package right away! Customer service was the best in business. And the pedal, when I received it, didn’t fall behind!

The Mini works like a sound healer; it makes everything you throw at it sound bigger, more exciting and harmonically pulchritudinous(what a word, but that’s just like the Mini). It grinds, either you are using it as a low gain booster or freaking out fuzz. The distortion sound is unique: warmy, grainy and grindy. Still it doesn’t shade your tone, it just transforms it to a greater beast.

I’ve been using The Mini 4 months now. Mr. Hamilton makes few of my all time favorite pedals, Team Awesome and now this. Those are my secret weapons which should be known by everybody.

The Mini is really a precious treasure.
I recently had a string of gigs where the only thing I could bring was a pedalboard b/c of flying to the first gig. I had rely on borrowing amps and guitars. In addition to that, the run was starting with playing bass and then switching to guitar with another band. I was worried about putting together a board that would give me a great bass tone and great guitar tone. The mini worked well with everything.
gibson humbuckers, old weak fender single coils, hofner bass p/u’s, pbass p/u’s~~~
Regardless of amp choice, it always sounded great and was easy to dial in.
So happy with this pedal. Thanks so much.

    12. John S

I picked up my Mini on impulse during a Black Friday sale. After a couple months of using it, I couldn’t be happier with it. Most of my drive pedals are op amp/diode clipping based and the Mini provides a totally different flavor that is more than welcome in my rig. Like others have said it does boost, fuzz, light and heavy overdrive, and everything in between. It works wonderfully with guitar and bass into both clean and dirty amps, and it stacks well with other pedals. Definitely trying to pick up more SS/BS in the future.

    13. Mike Andrews

The MINI was my first taste of ss/bs pedals and I love it. Into my clean Verellen amp it either pushes it over the edge into amazing amp breakup, or it can usher in some crazy tones all of its own.

Mainly, it sounds clear no matter what settings I use and cuts through any mix with no problem at all. Also stacks well with other fuzzes, as well as my ‘verb and delay.

    14. Adam (JWAR)

Brian is an amazing man that give me amazing sounds! Last year he built me a custom dual mini and I am absolutely in love with it. Never have I had an overdrive that could do so many different things. The tonal options are nuts on this guy and I am proud to own it! LOVE YOU!!!!! :)

    15. Paul Moffat

I purchased the Mini for bass guitar – I’ve been on a quest to find a great sounding OD/Distortion for some time now and have gone through many pedals to find it. I’m pairing the Mini with a new Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine to try and get all of my ‘dirt’ in two pedals.

      I think I found it.

The Mini is stellar. The controls are very flexible, with plenty of ‘sweet spots’ and plenty of ‘well, that’s weird, but cool’ settings as well. The bias will take some getting used to, but the Bass and Treble controls work great for EQ’ing the bass to sound natural with the pedal engaged – there is no lack of lows when you are generous with the bass EQ.

This has been used throughout the recording of our next LP, and will be staying on my board for a long time.

The Mini, by itself, works great as both a low gain OD or a pretty wild high gain distortion, but stacking it with the TAFM brings them both into fantasyland. So heavy, yet so articulate and defined.

      I’m impressed.

    16. Jon

After playing a custom fuck for awhile I had to get the mini for the bias knob. I’ve managed to make my guitar sound like it’s broken and it sounds great. Every time I go in the studio and hear the playback I’m wowed by how this thing cuts and by the uniqueness of the box. It’ll be hard for me to ever rid myself of it unless a mini with the crackle knob/switch/toggle and an octave was released.

The eq knobs and bias knob allow for the range to go from clean sparkly boost to a ripping broken speaker. Treble never gets spikey and bass never gets woofy. Definitely, can get some maestro fuzz tone sounds from it. It’s great.

    17. Christopher Merrill

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about this fantastic pedal. The mini is such a versatile box. The Bias knob is key with this for me. Everything from a very natural & slight tube amp rectifier sagging sound, all the way to full blown beautiful gated distortion, this pedal has it. The bass and treble controls are the icing on the cake, allowing you to tailor your sound to work best with the sonic space you want to occupy.
I’ve played through tons of overdrives, preamps, and tube amp emulator pedals etc and the mini is the best I’ve found! Thanks Brian.

    18. marcus n.

I can’t turn this mini off! I’ve been using it primarily on bass, but it sounds awesome with drum machines and synths as well.
the mini is an extremely versatile overdrive with really natural, warm sounding gain. definitely a unique pedal, plenty of character within.
the functionality of the mini is excellent. all of the knobs respond very well and effect the signal appropriately allowing you to dial in the perfect tone. the bias is key, takes you all the way from staved out, lofi sputter to sweet smooth sustain. crank that bass knob and you’ve got a meaty low end growl that sounds super heavy on bass guitar.
I tried out a bunch of boutique overdrives before purchasing the mini and this is the only one I got really inspired by.
so, whether you plan to use the mini on bass, guitar, synths or whatever!, you will not be disappointed.
      exceptional work Brian, thank you.

    19. mike f

Holy Crap, Brian! This pedal is insanely versatile and just the kind of sound I’ve been looking for for a long time. And that Bias knob! Geez now I have to save some money for the rest of your pedals. Wow man, just wow.

    20. Zach S.

You know those moments that completely validate our nerdy obsessions with these little boxes and chasing a sound, but are so rare that when they happen all you can think is “Wow”? Yeah, that’s what happened when I plugged into the Mini for the first time. This pedal is fantastic, and covers so many basses. The EQ controls are great and the bias knob is awesome for dialing in anything from a booster to a lo-fi fuzzy sound. To me, the Mini isn’t just another overdrive/dirt pedal, but more one that becomes a cornerstone of your sound. Buy this thing!

    21. Jonathan Gianino

To call the mini just an overdrive is seriously an understatement. It definitely excels at those traits if that’s what you’re looking for, but there’s so many other sounds to be had in this box. Between the bias and gain, it’s all over the place (in a good way). If that 60’s, garage rock psych sound is what you’re after it’s in there. Heavy fuzz, light breakup. Everything. Did I say everything yet? One thing I should add, is that I’m very picky about the way dirt pedals sustain a note. I’m all about those really subtle harmonics some pedals have and this one has got it. What else is there to say, buy this fucking pedal.

    22. Mike L

I have had a couple of SS/BS pedals and all have been great additions to my setup. The build quality for all the pedals is top notch and Brian is one of the most engaging builders I have chatted up. Specifically with the Mini though I immediately fell in love. It has such a warm sound like an amp just breaking up and you can also push it into some serious gain territory. I like how it doesn’t get muddy or really compressed. It really has become one of my primary, almost always on pedals to set that tone foundation.

    23. Vincent N

I’ve only spent a couple days with this pedal, but I can already tell its going to be a crucial element to my sound. As others have said, this little guy is extremely versatile, going from lo-fi starved fuzz, light grit, to chunky distortion, and can even hit muff territory. I am tempted to buy a second one and kick my Bass Big Muff off the board!

As a bassist, its important to me that I don’t lose low end, and the Mini delivers for sure. Even without a clean blend, you can dial this pedal in to be pretty indistinguishable from your clean signal. From there, you can tailor it to your liking. I run my signal through a Rusty Box preamp which gives it a little grit already, so I needed a step up from that. I dialed in a nice chunky distortion that feels like a natural extension of my preamp. Its wonderful. It responds so well to playing dynamics that I could probably leave it on all the time. when playing lightly, it is nearly as clean as my unaffected signal, but as soon as I dig in, it starts screaming. I let my guitar player try it out and he had trouble giving it back. I would recommend this pedal to anyone who plays an instrument, period. I feel like anyone could find a use for a Mini. Brian was great to deal with, and has made a loyal customer for life.

    24. Frederic

I have been through so many overdrives over the years searching for the One overdrive and the Mini has ended that search. It does pretty much anything you would ever want or need an overdrive to do and sounds amazing doing it!

      Brian really nailed this one.

    25. Joseph P.

I love this pedal. Shortly after receiving it, I was already trying to figure out how I could get myself a second mini. It sounds incredible and does everything I need from an OD.

      Really, get this pedal.

    26. Alfonso

Extremely versatile overdrive in a small box. By tweaking the knobs you’ve got 3 pedals in one (guitarrist):
      – Booster: set the gain close to the minimum, roll all the way up the BIAS knob and set the EQ for your taste.
      – Overdrive: here you have plenty of action to get the tone you are looking for, just set the BIAS between 9 and 12 o’clock or so, then you can even push the gain to the top.
      – Lo-fi fuzz: this is the secret weapon of the Mini. Roll off the BIAS knob and roll all the way up the gain, now you have a pretty inspiring fuzz. Be generous with the bass!!
In my opinion the Mini is definitely a good allie on your pedalboard, specially if you are looking for a small overdrive which could be use as a booster (or even a little fuzz).
Finally, talking about materials this pedal is a piece of rock, indestructible.

    27. Alex C

Love the Mini! Definitely one of the best overdrives that I’ve ever used on bass. The EQ controls really allow you to hone in on the sound you’re looking for and also help to retain low end on bass. I really like the flavor that the bias control gives you, although I have yet to use a sagged OD sound in a band setting. Still sounds gnarly. This pedal is sure to end your OD search!

Brian is an amazing man that give me amazing sounds! Last year he built me a custom dual mini and I am absolutely in love with it. Never have I had an overdrive that could do so many different things. The tonal options are nuts on this guy and I am proud to own it! LOVE YOU!!!!! :)

It’s great.

Holy Crap, Brian! This pedal is insanely versatile and just the kind of sound I’ve been looking for for a long time. And that Bias knob! Geez now I have to save some money for the rest of your pedals. Wow man, just wow.
