• fuck overdrive. that’s how i used to feel and exactly the reason why i built this pedal. tired of the countless similar-sounding pedals on the market, i wanted something new; something unique.

inspired by William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops (a tremendously unique and beautiful record), the fuck overdrive is my humble attempt to recreate in pedal form some of the crackling, disintegrating sounds found on the recordings. an extremely unique effect unlike any other, some of the tones are reminiscent of overdriven tape, blown-out compression, torn up speakers and overloaded tubes or amp “sag”.

multiple jfet gain stages are at the core of this warm-voiced overdrive, with a huge range spanning clean boost to gritty drive to beefy fuzz. the fuck overdrive sounds great on it’s own, but also pairs incredibly well with other pedals to transform your signal in subtle, yet complex and unexpected ways.

the crackle function is dynamically modulated (envelope controlled) and can also be momentarily engaged or disengaged for dramatic moments. turn up the threshold and the harder you play, the more the overdrive crackles, tries to keep up… and fails miserably.

at smallsound/bigsound, i have changed my mind about overdrive.

  • the fuck overdrive is a low to high gain JFET overdrive voiced to be warm, yet transparent with a wide range of drive spanning gritty overdrive to ballsy fuzz. the highlight of this pedal is a unique blown amp feature which provides crackles, compression, gating and EQ changes similar to that of torn speakers and a tube amp pushed past it's limits.

    power
please use a standard 9V DC power supply (designed for musical instruments) with a negative center 2.1mm barrel and do NOT run at higher voltages. peak current draw is around 7mA.

    controls
threshold: this sets the threshold at which the input signal modulates the JFET voltage. lower settings are subtle and more dynamic playing is required, while higher settings cause more crackling, compression and gating. note *lower gain settings will result in more extreme, bass-heavy artifacts, while higher gain settings will result in softer, more compression-y note bloom.

gain: simultaneously controls 2 gain stages for an extremely wide range from clean boost to overdrive to fuzz. this control hugely impacts the volume, so be careful…

highcut: a passive 6db/octave LPF which attenuates frequencies higher than the cutoff, from 1.5kHz to around 16kHz.

volume: simple enough. it can be LOUD, depending on the settings of the gain control, so start with it low.

on/off toggle: this sets the operating mode of the pedal. when ON, the pedal will always be in blown amp mode and burst will engage "normal" overdrive. when OFF, the pedal will work as a "normal" overdrive with burst engaging the blown amp function.

light/heavy toggle: changes the character of the crackle from a lighter, more compression-y feel with a longer decay to a more intense, low-end buzz and rattle with a shorter decay. threshold may need to be adjusted when this setting is changed.

burst (momentary footswitch): works in conjunction with the on/off toggle. hold down for either "normal" overdrive or blown amp mode.

First I must say that I only bought this one for the broken speaker sound but the od is really, really good. It replaced my “red lama” going into a “Sarno earth drive” for some dirt boost and single string melodies. Then I have that momentary switch whenever I want it to explode. If you love when Neil Young brings the thunder, you will love this one.
      Cheers

    2. Jordon

I ordered this with a latching BOOM switch as opposed to the momentary, and all I can say is HOLY SHIT I FUCKING LOVE THIS THING. I fell in love with this overdrive the second I dialed it in. This pedal has a ton of versatility packed into it and I can already tell it will never be replaced on my pedalboard. I have been fucked. You should be too.

    3. Travis

My favorite overdrive pedal. This thing never leaves my chain and is probably. Plenty of the other reviews have done a good job describing the tone. All I can really say is that it is mesmerizing. I can just sit and play and listen to the thick sounds for days.

the fuck overdrive is really great! a dirt pedal running a spectrum from clean boost all the way to a medium gain distortion that is then transformed with the addition of the crackle function, which, when engaged, ranges from introducing gorgeously delicate artifacts into the signal all the way to apocalyptic disintegrations. from stars to storms.

i needed an overdrive that could cover the more orthodox tones, which it does elegantly (from clear to warm, always with rich overtones) for a variety of paying gigs, as well as have sonic territories to explore for my own creative projects, win//win! i also dig that the idea for this pedal was inspired by a minimalist composer’s work, too cool.

it was very important to me that it respond well to my playing dynamics and the pedal has been interacting well with the other pedals on my board. the enclosure, switches and knobs all feel solid and look fantastic. to anyone looking for an extremely unique pedal made by a dude that understands the potential effects have as a creative tool, get one!

    5. Al Harith

A pedal for people who’ve grown jaded towards overdrive. The sounds you get out of this thing can’t be imitated by any other pedal in the market today. More than worth it.

    6. Karl B

I’ve wanted one of these for years. What took me so long?!

This has in practice become an always-on pedal for me. I only turn it off when I need really clean, sustaining notes for looping or more delicate and/or funky stuff. These days, whenever I turn on another overdrive or fuzz and this one is not on after it I immediately feel like something is missing. The Crackle function is just the delicious, seductive icing on the cake that is this lovely piece of electronic pastry.

    7. Dan

This pedal makes my guitars sound HUGE whether it’s low gain or high gain. Some pedal focus your sound whereas I feel the FUCK expands your signal. You remember those Herbal Essence commercials? That’s what happens to me every time I plug this pedal in. I’m completely serial.

Great pedal. Awesome guy that happens to be in a kick ass band.

    8. Ben

It took me a long time to get pick one of these up. I had a Mini, so wouldn’t the Fuck just cover the same territory? From the first time I plugged it in I realized just how wrong that was. The Fuck is one of the greatest, most impressive pedals I have ever had the pleasure of using, on the same caliber as something like a DMM in its shear character and originality. All your boxed in conceptions of overdrive/dirt are blown out through your ears as you play with the controls, discovering new takes on compression, tape saturation, lo-fi dirt right through to glorious full overblown fuzz that eradicates any origin of your sound into something totally new and beautiful. At first I had it at the front of my chain with the mini after it, but after a bit of experimenting I settled on what I find to be the perfect set-up: Using the Mini as a pre-amp, slight dirt boost right after my tuner, while the Fuck is right at the end of the chain (after a couple delays and pitchshifters). This lets me run everything through the Fuck, blowing out repeats and loops with the crackle and generally pushing my sound into new territories. All in all its one of the most inspiring pedals I’ve ever owned, and one that I could never sell. Genius is overused in my opinion, but I truly think Brian is a visionary, and the Fuck is certainly a product of that.

    9. Jono

Such a diverse pedal with so much character. Every setting sounds fantastic. I’m mainly using it as a heavy distortion – there is so much texture and depth but also a lot of clarity that I haven’t heard in other overdrives. This pedal is also so much fun to really experiment with – lots of beautiful sounds putting the crackle in front of reverbed loops and letting it do its thing.

    10. Tom

without a doubt my favourite pedal , i could get by only using this and tuner (but wheres the fun in that?). rad on bass, rad on guitar and fantastic throughout the gain range
i will admit i struggled with implementing the crackle at first, but now i think i get it (with an active bass it completely overloads and makes a massive broken fuzz tone on on guitar i use it for crackly broken, neutral milk hotel shit)
      buy it!

    11. Eivind August

some stuff… JK. This has got to be the best overdrive pedal in teh earth! I’ve never really bonded with drive pedals except for fuzzes, but this one is a keeper. It does so many awesome sounds, the crackle is crazy, it has a wide gain rage, its gain rages, rage through gain, FUCK!

Everybody should own one. You as well. You need it, even if you don’t know it yet. Man, dem texturez and toanz.

    12. aaron

awesome piece of gear. Really gets that crunchy, yet defined type of sound. If you want it that way that is. This pedal is very flexible, and it can do clean boost, transparent overdrive, heavy distortion, and a “my tubes are dying” type of sound. Just really excellent. Buy it!

    13. Denis

I can’t believe I waited so long to get one. This pedal sounds great with nearly everything I throw at it – from slight boost, to fuzzed out doom, to lo-fi breaking speakers, “bury your recording in your yard for 30 years”, and everything in between. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a versatile pedal, capable of countless unique (but still instantly good-sounding) tones. Thank you for saying “fuck overdrive” and thank you for making this pedal, Brian.

    14. Robert P

What an incredible pedal. The range of tones and sounds that can come from it are astounding. The highcut feature allows you to really color the tone if you so desire. This pedal is very easy to use for more than merely an overdrive or fuzz. It is definitely one of the most versatile pedals I’ve owned. There is so much to be had by this pedal and I’ve barely scratched the surface.

    15. Nestor

You’d think that after a few weeks of having this pedal plugged in I’d have found a tone and stuck with it but every time I’ve gone to pick up my bass I’ve turned all the knobs on the Fuck right back down to zero because it’s just so much fun dialling in to whole new pockets of throaty roar and spitting fuzz. In fact, I’m already looking forward to losing another hour with it as soon as this review is submitted.

I initially bought a Fuck to add some grit and weight at the start of my chain but now everything that comes after it is just more icing on a unique, unpredictable and wonderfully angry cake.

      Yum.

    16. Joseph P.

Sounds incredible. There isn’t a bad setting to be found on the pedal, just tons of great, useable tones. The crackle is incredible and unique. This pedal packs tons of features and is a great price for what you get. If you’re thinking about buying one, you should buy one.

    17. Richard P.

This pedal stacks so well it’s crazy for the best explodey fuzztones imaginable and is just perfect with any of my other fuzzes. I still don’t know what’s going on with the crackle thing, but I love what it does to my tone!

    18. Eric

One of my favourite pedals ever. It’s always on. My “clean” tone is F*ck + some reverb. Perfect for light OD to heavy fuzz. And that crackle! You will definitely not be disappointed with this pedal

    19. Lawrence B

The fuck has been my go to sound for overdrive for over a year. It’s amazing on bass and guitar, play some chords loudly and fuck it sounds really great. Doesn’t sound like your generic OD and it stacks well with every pedal I’ve ever ran next to it. Great range in the gain.

    20. jonQ

Always on. It is my sound– the primary color of my tone. I don’t push the gain, I let the volume push my tubes. I keep the clipping low but it is there and it really makes me sound much louder than I really am… a wonderful pedal.

    21. Paul

My favourite pedal of all time. Beautiful crisp overdrive sounds, thick, ripping crunch tones, searing fuzz and FUCK, EVERYTHING’S EXPLODING death tones. Buy one.
